Testing for specific allergies helps your doctor pinpoint what’s causing your discomfort. Testing done by an allergist is safe for children and adults.
The most common and reliable allergy test is a skin test. These tests are accurate, safe, and minimally invasive. Blood tests may also be used when skin testing isn’t an option.
A skin test is a simple procedure. It involves tiny pricks made on the surface of the skin of your back.
The pricks are made with a tiny needle that contains small amounts of common allergens.
The surface of your skin will be lightly punctured with a minute amount of an allergen.
If you’re allergic to the allergen, a small bump will appear – like a mosquito bite.
You’ll need to stay still during the test so we can see if you’re having a reaction and, if so, to which allergens.
The test can take 15-30 minutes. Results are available right away.
A few things to keep in mind:
The results of a skin test will help your allergist determine exactly what you’re allergic to – and what you’re not. Every person is unique, so knowing your specific allergy triggers is key to developing effective treatment.
At KCAA, we’re focused on your comfort and getting the information we need to accurately and effectively treat you. Allergy test results arm our physicians with data to create a personalized treatment plan for you. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 913-491-5501.
